JORDAN WAS BORN OF IRISH PARENTAGE IN EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND, HENCE HE WAS REGARDED AS ONE OF THE GREAT SCOTTISH GRANDMASTERS OF THE AGE. HE WON THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BY DEFEATING JAMES FERRIE IN 1896, 4-3-33 DRAWS. HE NEVER LOST THE TITLE IN CROSSBOARD PLAY, BUT RETIRED UNDEFEATED AFTER DEFENDING IT AGAINST HARRY FREEDMAN 7-1-21 DRAWS IN 1902. ALTHOUGH JORDAN DID CONTINUE TO PLAY THE GAME (PARTICULARLY AT THE 1905 US-GB INTERNATIONAL MATCH, WHERE HE HAD THE BEST SCORE OF ALL PLAYERS 13-0-27 DRAWS) HE WOULD NOT DEFEND THE TITLE AGAIN, AND THE TITLE ITSELF WOULD REMAIN "UNCLAIMED" UNTIL AFTER JORDAN'S DEATH. JUST PRIOR TO HIS DEATH, JORDAN WAS RUMORED TO BE CONSIDERING RETURNING TO ACTIVE MATCH PLAY, AND DEFENDING THE TITLE AGAINST ALFRED JORDAN. (WHO WOULD MAKE A CLAIM TO THE TITLE AFTER RICHARD JORDAN'S DEATH). AT THE TIME OF HIS DEATH, RICHARD "DICK" JORDAN WAS CONSIDERED BY MANY TO BE THE GREATEST PLAYER THE WORLD HAD EVER SEEN.

10/23  DEATH OF HUGH HENDERSON OF PITTSBURG, PA. 

HENDERSON WAS BORN IN MUIRKIRK, AYRSHIRE,SCOTLAND, BUT LATER EMIGRATED TO AMERICA IN 1905. IN 1907 HE BECAME EDITOR OF THE CHECKER COLUMN IN THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH.

IN 1910 HE LOST A CHALLENGE TO NEWELL BANKS FOR THE MATCH CHAMPIONSHIP OF AMERICA, BUT LATER BECAME A TWO-TIME AMERICAN TOURNEY CHAMPION, WINNING IN 1912 AND 1915, THE FIRST EVER TO ACCOMPLISH THIS. HENDERSON WAS A VICTIM OF THE MASSIVE INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC THAT SWEPT THE UNITED STATES IN 1918.
