Il Downstate at Decatur. I was shown no mercy and finished well down
in the minors. I was discouraged and probably would have quit the game had
it not been for the encouragement of my coach, Harland Richards, 1933 Il
state champion, who loaned me books and also many practice games at our
local chess & checker club. Two year later I finished 3rd in
Class A, after winning over the 1928 Il state champ, Oscae Apple,
of Rock Island, and was "hooked for life":this in my 77th (!!!) year
