FROM MS. ANNE RUHR......
"I graduated from the University
of Missouri in Columbia. I obtained this trophy the day I was walking down Orr Street in Columbia and saw a male friend going
through a dumpster that a storage company typically used to throw out items from a non-paying tenant. My friend stood in the
dumpster, spied me walking and said "Hey! Do you want this?" I said, "What do you have?" He held up the trophy and I said,
"Absolutely." He threw it at me and I caught it and saved it for about 15 years."
MS.
RUHR HAS GRANTED PERMISSION TO DISPLAY THIS PIECE OF THE GAME'S HISTORY HERE ON THE OMOCH SITE.

"HAND TRACED PAYNE'S GUIDE WATERMARKS"
PICTURED ARE HAND TRACED PAPER WATERMARKS , TRACED DIRECTLY FROM THE FIRST TWO PRINTINGS OF PAYNE'S
GUIDE.
FROM LIAM STEPHENS "I have in my possession a letter, dated 29 Jan 1953, from W. G. Parker, the editor
of the BDJ, to Mr. Parlow enclosing a typewritten draft of Parlow’s article with a number of suggested amendments to
the text included.
This
amended copy is almost identical to the final printed version of the article appearing in the BDJ.
From
the contents of Mr. Parker’s letter it appears the hand traced copies of the watermarks were provided by him, for Mr
Parlow’s use.
I
wonder if modern day dating techniques could establish, conclusively, which of the two versions of the book was the original?"

ON THE DEATH OF THE LEGENDARY FORMER WORLD CHAMPION ,ROBERT MARTINS.

"WOOD'S LADDER RECORDS"
WITHIN THE PAGES OF THESE BINDERS ARE THE RECORDS OF WOOD'S LADDER FROM 1979 UNTIL 2005.
WOOD'S LADDER WAS THE LONGEST RUNNING MAIL PLAY CHECKERS LADDER IN THE GAMES HISTORY. IT WAS
STARTED BY, AND GOT ITS NAME FROM, REX B. WOOD, IN THE MID 1930'S. THE LADDER BECAME A PART OF SEVERAL DIFFERENT PERIODICALS
BEFORE FINALLY SETTLING IN ON THE PAGES OF THE AMERICAN CHECKER FEDERATION BULLETIN.
WHAT IS REPRESENTED HERE ARE THE RECORDS FROM EARL HANGEN'S TENURE AS THE DIRECTOR.
FOR OVER TWENTY FIVE YEARS , EARL RAN THE LADDER VERY TIGHTLY, AND KEPT THE MOST DETAILED RECORDS
POSSIBLE. AS OF 2002, EARL HAD CREATED OVER 2100 MATCHES ON THE LADDER.
ALL OF THE GAME SHEETS THEMSELVES WERE SENT TO WHOEVER WAS THE ACF GAMES EDITOR AT THE TIME,
BUT THE REST OF THE LADDER RECORDS ARE PRESERVED HERE.
FROM JAY HINNERSHITZ "I know Earl considered his role as ACF Mail Play Director more important,
.....but he was much prouder of his work on Wood's Ladder, and his "Wood's Ladder Report", which he would send to members."
IN THE EARLY 1990'S, MANY OF THE MASTER MAIL PLAYERS BEGAN TO LOSE INTEREST IN MAIL PLAY, DUE
TO THE BELIEF THAT THEY WERE PLAYING AGAINST COMPUTERS, WHICH HAD AT THAT POINT BECOME MUCH MORE AFFORDABLE TO THE AVERAGE
PLAYER.
SHORTLY AFTER THAT, THE INTERNET BECAME ACCESSIBLE TO PLAYERS, AND GAMES COULD BE PLAYED ELECTRONICALLY,
IN REAL TIME, OR VIA E-MAIL.
FINALLY, WHEN EARL HANGEN'S HEALTH BEGAN TO FAIL AND HE COULD NO LONGER PROCEED AS DIRECTOR, THE LADDER
ENDED ITS ALMOST SEVENTY YEAR HISTORY IN 2005.
PERHAPS, IN THE FUTURE, THE LADDER WILL ONE DAY RISE AGAIN IN ONE FORM OR ANOTHER, AND WOOD'S NUMBER ONE
RUNG WILL ONCE AGAIN BECOME ONE OF THE MOST COVETED POSSESSIONS IN CHECKERS.
HOWEVER, THE LONGER THE SILENCE, THE MORE THE CHANCE OF WOOD'S LADDER BECOMING
A PART OF THE DISTANT PAST, EXISTING ONLY WITHIN THE MEMORIES OF THE PLAYERS WHO AT ONE TIME CLIMBED THE LADDER,
AND, LATER ,AS JUST A FADED PART OF THE GAME'S ANCIENT HISTORY.
THESE RECORDS ARE CURRENTLY IN THE POSSESION OF JAY HINNERSHITZ, WEST READING, PA.

THIS VERY UNIQUE PIECE OF DRAUGHTS HISTORY IS FROM THE COLLECTION OF LIAM STEPHENS, IRELAND.
