EXHIBIT 130JH "OLDBURY-GALLAGHER PROMO FLYER"
EXHIBITED IS A PROMOTIONAL FLYER FOR THE ILL-FATED DEREK OLDBURY-FRANK
GALLAGHER BRITISH TITLE MATCH , SLATED FOR APRIL 1962.
RESEARCH BY LIAM STEPHENS TURNED UP THE FOLLOWING....
Extracted from Gallagher's obituary in the EDJ June 1962:
"Gallagher, in his short draughts career had fought his way to the top and was to have played Derek Oldbury for
the British Match title in April this year, he was 40 years of age and apparently had no living relatives."
NorthWest Draughts Federation (NWDF) Newsletter, Vol 1, Issue 3, March
1999.
Extract from article:
Famous North West Players from the Past
"Frank Gallagher (? - 1962)
Frank Gallagher was born near St. Johnston in Co. Donegal (year unknown) and moved to Manchester
in search of work in his late 20's. He played draughts in the clubs around Manchester, and by the mid 1950's he had won the
Manchester Championship twice.
From then on, Frank became one of the most consistent and successful players in England, being runner-up in the English Open Championship
in 1957 at Leicester, and again in 1959 at London. His greatest moment came in the 1961 English Open Championship held at
Weston Super-Mare, when he won the Championship title ahead of Derek Oldbury and Alf Huggins to become the English Open
Champion, and the proud holder of the "Gelsthorp Cup".
That same year, he also captained the Lancashire team to victory in the 1961 "Reynold's Cup", British Inter-counties
Championships. Frank Gallagher then challenged Derek Oldbury for the British Match Title, which was scheduled to be played
for in April 1962.
A few weeks before their match was to be played, Frank's flat was burgled by thieves on 3rd April 1962
and the "Gelsthorp Cup" was stolen. Overcome by distress he took his own life the following day."
INCLUDED IN THE EXHIBIT IS A PAGE FROM RICHARD FORTMAN'S BOOK "BASIC CHECKERS", GIVING A GAME PLAYED BY GALLAGHER, AND
SOME INSIGHT INTO THE DRAUGHTS CAREER AND TRAGEDY SURROUNDING THE DEATH OF THIS YOUNG MAN.
THIS FLYER WAS AMONG THE POSSESSIONS OF THE LATE DENNIS BEADELL, AND WAS FORWARDED BY HIS FAMILY TO JAY HINNERSHITZ
FOR EXHIBIT ON THE OMOCH.

EXHIBIT 126RW "REX
WOOD-ASA LONG LETTER"
THIS HISTORICAL DOCUMENT DEMONSTRATES THE EFFORTS OF REX WOOD TO PROMOTE A WORLD TITLE MATCH IN 1944 BETWEEN WILLIAM “WYLLIE”
RYAN AND THEN 3-MOVE WORLD CHAMPION ASA LONG.
LATER, IN 1948-49, A “PLAY-OFF” WAS ARRANGED BETWEEN THE THREE LEADING AMERICAN PLAYERS, ASA LONG, WALTER HELLMAN
AND WILLIAM RYAN.
HELLMAN DEFEATED LONG IN 1948 2-1-47 DRAWS, AND THEN PLAYED RYAN IN 1949, THE RESULT BEING A DRAWN MATCH 4-4-42 DRAWS, HELLMAN
RETAINING THE TITLE OF 3-MOVE WORLD CHAMPION. THE GAMES FROM THESE MATCHES WOULD LATER BE PUBLISHED IN THE BOOK “WORLD
CHAMPIONSHIP CHECKERS”.
SADLY, MR. WOOD DID NOT LIVE TO SEE THESE HISTORIC MATCHES, HAVING PASSED AWAY ON MARCH 3, 1946.
THIS COPY OF THE LETTER IS IN THE POSSESSION OF RUTH WOOD, THE DAUGHTER OF REX WOOD.

EXHIBIT 120BF "TOURNAMENT MEDALS , 1887-1888"
SHOWN ARE TWO
MEDALS AWARDED TO MR. ARCHIBALD MILLAR IN 1888.
MR. ARCHIBALD DAVID MILLAR WAS BORN OCTOBER 26, 1866 IN CAMBUSNETHAN, SCOTLAND. IN APRIL, 1912, HE EMIGRATED TO
CANADA. HE PASSED AWAY IN NEW WESTMINSTER, BRITISH COLUMBIA ON SEPTEMBER 5, 1933.
AS CAN BE SEEN ON THE INSCRIPTIONS ON THE MEDALS, THESE WERE WON IN THE LANARKSHIRE AREA OF SCOTLAND.
THE MEDALS ARE SILVER, 2 1/2 INCHES IN DIAMETER AND 3/8 INCH THICK.
SCOTTISH
HISTORIAN CHRIS REEKIE OFFERED THIS RESEARCH....
"The name of Archibald Millar is not known to me.
I can say that Hamilton is a big town and Overtown is a village or small community, both east south-east of Glasgow and both
in Lanarkshire.
When
The Draughts World began publication in 1892, it appeared weekly for a short time before becoming monthly, and carried
three articles on "Draughts in Glasgow 30 years ago". The third article, on December 24, 1892, (on page 130), has this passage: "The
Lanarkshire Draughts Association, instituted 1879, was the first of the kind formed in any country. For years, when its tournaments
were open to city players, its annual meetings attracted the attention of draughts-players far and near. And no wonder, for
there Bryden, Campbell, Moir, and McKelvie struggled gallantly year after year for the honour of holding the Association trophy.
After each of the players named had held the trophy twice, it was finally won by Bryden, who was presented with it and a purse
of sovereigns from his Glasgow friends in 1888. Since then the tourneys have been limited to the county players pure
and simple, and this winter the committee have made a new departure, and will hold a club tournament in Hamilton early in
next year."
It seems
to me that Mr Millar won his medals at local competitions during this period. It looks to me that these could have been the
first prize.
There
were then draughts clubs all over Scotland, in cities, towns, and hamlets alike, and club championships would be held.
Also, inter-club and inter-county matches took place. Glasgow was seen as the hub of all draughts activity in Scotland.
Scotland's five world champions
were all from the central belt of Scotland, Anderson from Carluke in Lanarkshire, Wyllie and Jordan from Edinburgh, Ferrie
born at Greenock and resident in the Glasgow area, and Stewart from Kelty in Fife."
THESE HISTORIC ARTIFACTS
FROM THE GOLDEN AGE OF THE SCOTTISH GRANDMASTERS WERE SUBMITTED FOR EXHIBITION ON THE OMOCH BY A DIRECT DESCENDANT OF
MR. MILLAR WHO WISHES TO REMAIN ANONYMOUS.

"ACCESSORIES; 3-MOVE CARDS"
SHOWN ARE TWO EXAMPLES OF 3-MOVE RESTRICTION CARDS.
THESE CARDS ARE USED AT OFFICIALLY SANCTIONED TOURNAMENTS TO PICK A 3-MOVE OPENING. THIS OPENING
MUST THEN BE PLAYED TWICE, WITH EACH PLAYER TAKING A TURN WITH THE RED COLORED PIECES MOVING FIRST.
3-MOVE IS THE MOST HIGHLY REGARDED STYLE OF PLAY, WITH THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BEING RECOGNIZED
AS THE PLAYER WHO HOLDS THE 3-MOVE MATCH CHAMPIONSHIP.
THE OFFICIAL LIST OF 3-MOVE OPENINGS HAS BEEN MODIFIED SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE YEARS, WITH
NEW DECKS BEING MADE TO REFLECT THE CHANGES.
THE EXAMPLES SHOWN WERE MADE MANY YEARS AGO.
THE GREEN COLORED CARDS ARE FROM THE ACF "TUFF DECK", AND WERE PRINTED BY THE LATE
PAUL OTTEY, A PENNSYLVANIA CHECKERIST OF A FEW GENERATIONS AGO. THESE HE WOULD DISTRIBUTE TO FELLOW MAIL PLAYERS.
THE WHITE COLORED CARDS WERE SOLD ON EBAY BY A SELLER WHO STATED THAT THEY WERE
PURCHASED FROM THE ESTATE OF THE LATE PROF. RAYMOND FIELDS, MANY TIMES KENTUCKY STATE CHAMPION, AND REPRESENT THE STANDARD
ACF 3-MOVE DECK OF THE TIME. THESE ARE CONTAINED WITHIN A SMALL PLASTIC FOLDING CASE, SHOWN AT THE TOP OF THE PHOTO.

it got lost in the mail. So, Earl sent him a second, and sent it certified, as he wanted to be sure that Marion
got the book. The image produced is directly from the original receipt, which Earl kept in his personal scrapbook ."
