WOULD GO ON TOUR AND PLAY ALL COMERS, EITHER IN INDIVIDUAL GAMES OR IN SET STAKE MATCHES. HE WAS PART OF A MAJOR RIVALRY DURING
THE 1840'S WITH ANDREW ANDERSON, THEY HAVING CONTESTED FIVE MATCHES AGAINST EACH OTHER. HE WOULD LATER HAVE A RIVALRY
WITH ROBERT MARTINS THAT WOULD SPAN FOUR DECADES.
AS A RESULT OF THESE TOURS AND MATCHES, THERE ARE HUNDREDS (PERHAPS THOUSANDS) OF HIS

ALTHOUGH AT SEVERAL TIMES THERE WAS CONTROVERSY REGARDING THIS TITLE.
REGARDLESS OF HIS STATURE OF WORLD CHAMPION, HE WAS KNOWN AT THE TIME OF
HIS PASSING, AND WILL ALWAYS BE KNOWN, AS "THE FATHER OF MODERN DRAUGHTS".
JAMES WYLLIE, PASSED AWAY AT HIS RESIDENCE IN GLASGOW, SCOTLAND AT THE AGE OF
80. HIS DATE OF BIRTH HAS ONLY RECENTLY BEEN ESTABLISHED (BY CHRIS REEKIE) AS 8 JULY 1818.

*Regarding the spelling of Wyllie, I give some correspondence from Mr. Chris Reekie.....
"You mention the spelling of Wylie with one L. This is an interesting point. James always signed himself
with a double L and it is the spelling in the official records of himself and his children. As you say, his headstone where
he is buried at Scoonie Cemetery at Leven in Fife bears the name James Wylie. This could have been a mistake by the sculptor,
but I think it is understandable. James came from an old Scottish family and there are branches it of around the world both
Wyllie and Wylie. I think the sculptor used the alternative spelling, as did Stearns. It is not unusual to see well-known
people reported in newspapers by an alternative spelling of their name, such as Johnston for Johnson and Steele for Steel."
